damfest's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- all politics is local I had intended to pick up some ice cream at Four Queens after voting today, as a reward for performing my civic duty and a final treat for the calendar year, but those bastards have already closed up shop for the season. Rats. I consoled myself over sweet & sour chicken and white rice at the Hy-Vee deli. Election results have my two candidates winning, Crews for mayor and Nick Taiber for the vacant at-large seat, although he's under 50% and I think that means he'll have to face Winterhof in a runoff election. Taiber received 2517 votes (46%) to Winterhof's 2239 (41%), with third candidate Mark Niedert trailing with 676 votes (12%). Usually the higher vote-getter wins a runoff but it's pretty close this time. Crews landed a solid 69% of the vote (3921 votes) against David Sires' 29% (1617) and pip squeak Gage Rewerts with a measly 2% (108 votes). Crews earned his sixth consecutive term as mayor, a position he's held for 24 of the past 38 years. I vote in Ward 3, represented by John Runchey, who ran unopposed. Also on the ballot was an extension of the local 1-cent sales tax that goes towards street repairs and reconstruction. I voted for it, and expect it to pass. 10:06 p.m. - 2009-11-03 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
